Child abuse by Catholic priests has seriously dented the trust of the faithful in the Church. Charles Evers, who was abused by a priest, converted to Islam and now is called Yusuf. “Catholicism is a nasty faith,” Yusuf says.
Many people use Paul’s writings as proof that Jesus is God. But this is not fair to Paul, because Paul clearly believed that Jesus is not God.
In his first letter to Timothy, Paul wrote:
“I charge you in the sight of God, and Christ Jesus, and the elect angels, to keep these instructions . . .” (ch. 5, v. 21).
It is clear from this that the title God applies not to Christ Jesus, but to someone else. In the following chapter, he again differentiates between God and Jesus when he says:
“In the sight of God who gives life to everything, and of Christ Jesus . . .” (ch. 6, v. 13).
Paul then went on to speak of
“the second appearance of our Lord Jesus Christ which God will bring about in his own time” (vv. 14-15).
Again, the title God is deliberately turned away from Jesus.
Incidentally, many people think that when Jesus is called “Lord” in the Bible that means “God”. But in the Bible this title means master or teacher, and it can be used for addressing humans (see 1 Peter ch. 3, v. 6).
What is more important, however, it to notice what Paul says next, for this will demolish any supposition that Paul took Jesus for God. What he says about God in the following passage clearly shows that Jesus is not God. Paul says:
“God the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and the Lord of lords, who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see” (1 Timothy ch. 6, vv. 15-16).
Paul says that God alone is immortal. Immortal means he does not die. Check any dictionary. Now, anyone who believes that Jesus died cannot believe that Jesus is God. Such a belief would contradict what Paul said here. Furthermore, to say that God died is a blasphemy against God. Who would run the world if God died? Paul believed that God does not die.
Paul also said in that passage that God dwells in unapproachable light — that no one has seen God or can see him. Paul knew that many thousands of people had seen Jesus. Yet Paul can say that no one has seen God because Paul was sure that Jesus is not God.
This is why Paul went about teaching not that Jesus was God, but that he was God’s Messiah (see Acts 9:22; 16:3; 18:5).
When he was in Athens, Paul spoke of God as “the God who made the world and everything in it,” then he identified Jesus as “the man whom God appointed” (Acts 17:24-31).
Clearly, for Paul, Jesus was not God, and he would be shocked to see his writings used for proving the opposite of what he believed.
Paul even testified in court saying:
“I admit that I worship the God of our fathers . . . ” (Acts 24:14).
And Jesus is the Servant of that God, for we read in Acts,
“The God of our fathers has glorified his servant Jesus” (ch. 3, v. 13).
For Paul, the Father alone is God.
Paul said that there is “one God and Father of all” (Ephesians ch. 4, v. 6). Paul said again,
“For us there is but one God, the Father . . . and one Lord, Jesus Christ” (1 Corinthians 8:6).
Paul’s letter to the Philippians ch. 2, vv. 6-11 is often quoted as proof that Jesus is God. But the very passage shows that Jesus is not God. This passage has to agree with Isaiah 45:22-24 where God (Yahweh) said that every knee should bow to Yahweh, and every tongue should confess that righteousness and strength are in Yahweh alone. Paul was aware of this passage, for he quoted it in Romans 14:11. Knowing this, Paul declared,
“I kneel before the Father” (Ephesians 3:14).
The letter to the Hebrews ( ch. 1, v. 6) says that the angels of God should worship the Son. But this passage depends on Deuteronomy, ch. 32, v. 43, in the Septuagint version of the Old Testament. This phrase cannot be found in the Old Testament used by Christians today, and the Septuagint version is no longer considered valid by Christians. However, even the Septuagint version, does not say worship the Son. It says let the Angels of God worship God (Yahweh).
The Bible insists that Yahweh alone is to be worshipped. In Deuteronomy ch .6, v. 16, we read,
“Worship Yahweh your God and serve him only.”
Jesus, on whom be peace, believed in this, for he also stressed it in Luke ch. 4, v. 8. And Jesus too fell on his face and worshipped God (see Matthew 26:39).
Paul knew that Jesus worshipped God (see Hebrews 5:7), and Paul taught that Jesus will remain forever subservient to God (see 1 Corinthians, ch. 15, v. 28).

The Catholic Church in Rome made the extraordinary admission yesterday that it is aware priests from at least 23 countries have been sexually abusing nuns.
Most of the abuse has occurred in Africa, where priests vowed to celibacy, who previously sought out prostitutes, have preyed on nuns to avoid contracting the Aids virus.
Confidential Vatican reports obtained by the National Catholic Reporter, a weekly magazine in the US, have revealed that members of the Catholic clergy have been exploiting their financial and spiritual authority to gain sexual favours from nuns, particularly those from the Third World who are more likely to be culturally conditioned to be subservient to men.
The reports, some of which are recent and some of which have been in circulation for at least seven years, said that such priests had demanded sex in exchange for favours, such as certification to work in a given diocese.
In extreme instances, the priests had made nuns pregnant and then encouraged them to have abortions.
The US article was based on five documents, which senior women from religious orders and priests have presented to the Vatican over the past decade. They describe a particularly bad situation in Africa. In a continent devastated by Aids, nuns, along with early adolescent girls, are perceived by some as safe sexual targets. The reports said that the church authorities had done little to tackle the problem.
The Vatican reports cited countless cases of nuns forced to have sex with priests. Some were obliged to take the pill, others became pregnant and were encouraged to have abortions. In one case in which an African sister was forced to have an abortion, she died during the operation and her aggressor led the funeral mass. Another case involved 29 sisters from the same congregation who all became pregnant to priests in the diocese.
The reports said that the cultures in some African countries made it almost impossible for a young woman to disobey an older man, especially one seen as spiritually superior. There were cases of novices who applied to their local priest or bishop for certificates of good Catholic practice that were required for them to pursue their vocation. In return they were made to have sex. Some incidents of sexual abuse allegedly took place almost within the Vatican walls.
Certain unscrupulous clerics took advantage of young nuns who were having trouble finding accommodation, writing their essays and funding their theological studies.
Forced to acknowledge the problem, the Vatican has tried to play down its gravity. In a statement issued yesterday the Pope’s official spokesman, Joaquin Navarro Valls, said: “The problem is known and involves a restricted geographical area. Certain negative situations must not overshadow the often heroic faith of the overwhelming majority of religious, nuns and priests”.
One of the most comprehensive documents was compiled by Sister Maura O’Donohue, an Aids co-ordinator for Cafod, the London-based Catholic Fund for Overseas Development.
She noted that religious sisters had been identified as “safe” targets for sexual activity. She quotes a case in 1991 of a community superior being approached by priests requesting that the nuns be made available to them for sexual favours.
“When the superior refused the priests explained they would otherwise be obliged to go to the village to find women and might thus get Aids.”Sister O’Donohue said her initial reaction to what she was told by her fellow religious “was one of shock and disbelief at the magnitude of the problem”.
While most of the abuse happened in African countries, Sister O’Donohue reported incidents in 23 countries including India, Ireland, Italy, the Philippines and the United States.
She heard cases of priests encouraging the nuns to take the pill telling them it would prevent HIV. Others “actually encouraged abortion for the sisters” and Catholic hospitals and medical staff reported pressure from priests to carry out terminations for nuns and other young women.
O’Donohue wrote in her report how a vicar in one African diocese had talked “quite openly” about sex, saying that “celibacy in the African context means a priest does not get married, but does not mean he does not have children.”
The head of the Vatican congregation for Religious Life, Cardinal Martinez Somalo, has set up a committee to look into the problem. But it seems to have done little beyond “awareness raising” among bishops.
More recently, in 1998, Sister Marie McDonald, mother superior of the Missionaries of Our Lady of Africa, put together a paper entitled The Problem of the Sexual Buse of African Religious in Africa and Rome.
She tabled the document to the Council of 16, made up of delegates of the international association of women’s and men’s religious communities and the Vatican office responsible for religious life. She noted that a contributing cause was the “conspiracy of silence”.
When she addressed bishops on the problem, many of them felt it was disloyal of the sisters to send reports.
“However, the sisters claim they have done so time and time again. Sometimes they were not well received. In some instances they are blamed for what happened. Even when they are listened to sympathetically nothing much seems to be done” One of the most tragic elements that emerges is the fate of the victims. While the offending priests are usually moved or sent away for studies, the women are normally chased out of their religious orders, they are then either to scared to return to their families or are rejected by them. they often finished up as outcasts, or, in a cruel twist of irony, as prostitutes, making a meagre living from an act they had vowed never to do.
One of the few religious in Rome willing to talk about the report was Father Giulio Albanese, of MISNA, the missionary news agency. “Missionaries are human beings, who are often living under immense psychological pressure in situations of war and ongoing violence. On one hand it’s important to condemn this horror and it’s important tell the truth, but we must not emphasise this at the expense of the work done by the majority, many of whom have laid down lives for witness” said Fr Albanese “The press only talks about missionaries when they are killed, kidnapped or are involved in something scandalous” he added.
As the Vatican digests the unpalatable evidence of how their own priests are ruining the lives of their sisters, many Catholics hope a strong message may come from on high. With the American bishops, the Pope spoke in clear terms about paedophile priests, telling them this was a scourge that had to be faced. Some now hope that he may be equally courageous in denouncing an evil which has been covered by silence and shame for too long.
My abuse hell by Birkby mum
“I THOUGHT I was going to be drowned.”
Terrifying thoughts for a girl of eight to endure.
But that was the case for young Deirdre O’Donoghue – now Deirdre Harper, a 55-year-old mother and grandmother, living in Birkby, Huddersfield.
Deirdre was living in care in Belfast back in the 1960s.
She had her head held repeatedly under her bathwater by a Catholic nun, whose rosary beads banged against the side of the bath.
Her crime? She had taken a bath at the wrong time – to avoid one in the Jeyes fluid used to clean the water.
She was one of many youngsters who claim they were subjected to systematic, brutal abuse at the hands of the Catholic nuns who ran Nazareth House, which was Deirdre’s home for eight frightening years.
She has told her story in the hope that it will help expose the evil that went on in that home and many other institutions in Northern Ireland.
Her evidence has been handed to police in Northern Ireland, who are helping conduct a Government-led inquiry into the alleged abuse.
The inquiry, sanctioned by the Stormont leaders, comes in the wake of the Catholic abuse scandal in the Republic of Ireland.
Deirdre has been petrified of water ever since those early days. She says the fear stems from the bath incident.
Other memories of those days include the time her face was pushed into urine-soaked sheets to punish her for wetting the bed.
Then there are the countless beatings she endured from a leather strap that hung near a string of rosary beads and the times she was pulled up flights of stairs by her hair.
Deirdre was one of hundreds of disadvantaged children taken into the care of the religious order, the Sisters of Nazareth, and placed into Nazareth House in south Belfast.
The huge red-brick building has long since been demolished, but Deirdre still has vivid, terrible memories.
She said: “I was brought up in Limerick, but we moved to Belfast when my dad got a job there.
“Then my family split up because of rows between my parents and I was taken into care, along with my two sisters and two brothers.
“We girls were sent to Nazareth House, but I was only able to see my sisters through the iron gates that separated the different yards for children of different ages.
“The first few months were okay, but as I moved into the older department, the beatings started. They were regular and often, and for any reason at all.
Jason Ulven, a former Modesto, Calif., youth pastor, was downloading a pornographic video on his computer at work when he had to leave it to go to the weekly pastoral staff prayer meeting.
While he was gone, his administrative assistant went into Ulven’s office to use the computer and was shocked by what he saw.
The assistant, who had been on the job for only a couple of weeks, didn’t confront Ulven, but did tell the Rev. Mark Krieger, Modesto Covenant’s senior pastor.
A day or two later, when he was called into Krieger’s office, Ulven downplayed the incident. After all, even his wife had caught just a glimpse of his secret life over the past 15 years, and the lies went deep.
“I told him I clicked on something, and it was a stupid mistake to make, and it wouldn’t ever happen again. I was trying to cover up the addiction,” Ulven said.
But Krieger had talked to denominational officials with experience in sexual addictions. They advised him to take Ulven’s computer and have an expert look at it. Ulven was temporarily suspended, pending an investigation.
Ulven is among a growing number of pastors – and men in general – who have been ensnared by an addiction to pornography. In a 2001 “Christianity Today” poll, 53 percent of pastors said Internet porn was a temptation and 37 percent called it a current struggle.
The addiction may seem solitary, but in fact is messy, inflicting distress on the spouse, children, ministry and others.
Ulven and his wife found help and a renewed faith, but it wasn’t easy.
“I was in torment,” Ulven said. “I had this major problem, and I knew it was a major problem, but I didn’t want to admit it. But I had to admit it.
“I remember taking my boys down to the park. They wanted to try riding a bike without training wheels for the first time. And they did it. As I ran alongside them, I remember thinking this should be my proudest moment at the time, but it wasn’t because I was a hypocritical pastor, and I was living a lie.”
A few nights later, Ulven couldn’t sleep. One fleeting thought was that he still had a key to the church, so he could go and retrieve his computer from the senior pastor’s office.
“But I was not a criminal, and I knew it was just time to come clean,” he said.
He wrote one letter to the senior pastor, admitting everything, and one to his wife, Jill. Up until that time, he said, “I was still deceiving her.”
Grace and discipline:
The Covenant denomination put Ulven under “discipline” and took away his pastoral license. They said the family should attend a different church to protect those hurt by his addiction, a consequence that deeply affected Ulven’s wife and children.
Local church leaders agreed on a plan: They would pay for an intensive four-day workshop in Tennessee on sexual addictions for the Ulvens and for counseling beyond that. They agreed to continue to pay Ulven’s salary for three months.
Ulven said it was an offer full of grace, one he knew he didn’t deserve.
His first step in his road to recovery was joining a newly formed support group in Modesto that worked with men addicted to pornography. Three pastors, including one with a story similar to Ulven’s, and four other men met weekly and agreed to be accountable to each other.
“For the first time, I felt like this was a God thing, that getting caught was something God had initiated,” Ulven said.
He and his wife and their two young sons – Riley and Zachary, then 8 and 5 – stayed in Modesto for a year. He took a job as a charter bus driver to pay the bills.
After the year, his church-sanctioned discipline was removed. He moved with his family to the Chicago area to enroll in North Park Seminary to complete his divinity degree.
The denomination allowed him to regain his pastoral license, Ulven said, because he never crossed the line into sexual abuse. “I never had touched anyone inappropriately or treated anyone inappropriately. If so, they would have still had me under discipline.”
Like many pornography addicts, Ulven got his first taste of graphic sexual photos when he was in fifth grade and a friend showed him a “dirty” magazine. The images, he said, “really left an imprint.”
The enticement grew in his teenage years.
“I was a real shy kid who didn’t have any confidence in speaking to girls, so when I could get access to pornography, there was some kind of comfort to that,” Ulven said. “I could look at that stuff and feel better. In your fantasy mind, these women accept you.”
His cycle of addiction began when he joined the Navy after high school. It coincided with his decision to become a Christian.
“I would feel just a low self-worth and then turn to pornography to medicate that. Then, as a Christian, I would feel that I screwed it up and would try not to see it,” Ulven said. “A few weeks would go by, and then I would just cave. There was a real repetition to that pattern.”
When he left the Navy in 1993, he met Jill in a Bible study. They were married the next year in Oregon.
“There were some of these milestone moments when I thought, ‘If only this thing happens, I’d be cured,'” Ulven said. “One of them was marriage. I thought all of my sexual needs would be met, and I could leave all this (pornography) behind.”
But the Internet had arrived and was like an adrenaline shot to his addiction.
“I felt powerless to the computer,” he said. “My addiction escalated, even when I felt spiritually close to God.”
Like other sexual addictions, Ulven’s pornography use proved costly.
“It probably damaged every relationship that I had,” he said. “Pornography is this illusion that you start to believe. It affected the way I saw Jill. I was always attracted to Jill. The damage wasn’t reflected (in comparing her to ‘perfect’ women). It had to do with the guilt. When we were intimate, I felt guilty. I wasn’t able to enjoy what God said was a good thing.”
Addiction to pornography created a barrier between Ulven and God. “I felt much shame,” he said. “It’s this weird irony that what we all want on our deepest level is to be loved and accepted just as we are. God offers that. But I didn’t get that, and I turned to pornography to feel better about myself by the acceptance of these fantasy women. It was driving a wedge between God and myself. It’s strange that we take something good from God, sex, and twist it to make it something bad.”
Burden falls on wife
Jill said her husband became adept at hiding the depth of his addiction.
“He came to me pretty early on in our marriage and told me that he had a problem with it,” she said. “I was just trying to do everything I could to get rid of all the places that it would be a temptation. I would call the video store and say, ‘No adult movies can be rented on our account.’ I’d check the history on the computer. I checked the mail. But I didn’t really know the extent of it. It turned out he had his own account somewhere else, so it was pointless.”
Unlike other women who often feel unworthy or physically unattractive when their husbands turn to pornography, Jill said, “I didn’t feel like it was something wrong with me, but it upset me. I felt betrayed and lied to and deceived. But I never understood the addiction part.”
After the Ulvens moved to Modesto in 2003, Jill said she didn’t see evidence for three years that her husband was still looking at pornography. Then, on Valentine’s Day weekend in 2006, she found and erased images on his home computer.
“We set up all kinds of rules,” she said. “I told him he couldn’t erase the (computer) memory. Then he came home a couple of months later and said they’d found it on his church laptop.
“He said it was because all of the rules at home had pushed him over. He said the (youth group) kids used his laptop, and who knew where all this stuff came from? It was just denial, denial. Finally, on the following Sunday, he said this had been going on forever.”
The workshop in Tennessee proved “extremely helpful and insightful” to Jill. “That’s when I found that all the checking I was doing was co-dependent stuff, and it wasn’t my job,” she said.
“He had his recovery, and my job was to stick to my recovery. I was really grieving, and I didn’t know I was. I was grieving the loss of our church, the loss of support, the loss of financial security, all of that. That’s when I started learning how strong I was and had enough strength to get through it.”
It doesn’t mean her journey was easy. “We’d moved to Modesto to be at that church,” she said. “I worked at the church. I did Pioneer girls (a children’s program) at the church. I was in a Bible study at the church. My whole life was at the church, and we could no longer go to the church.
“I remember being in my body and moving around and not existing, not wanting to look at anybody. But by the grace of God, I was moving and doing what I needed to do.”
A couple of years ago, Ulven was asked to tell his story to a group of about 1,000 pastors and their wives.
Jill had mixed feelings about it, sorrow that their “dirty laundry” was being aired again, but pride in her husband for recovering from the addiction and hope that their story could help others.
“I feel God has been using me to pay it forward, to be there for others who are going through the same thing,” she said. “The most important thing that I pass on to wives is it has nothing to do with them. All the addiction stuff starts a long time before they meet you.
“The other thing I pass on to people is that I didn’t come from a perfect background, either. I was able to give Jason grace because I needed it, too.”
Confession to sons
Ulven’s addiction affected not only his spouse, but also his children.
“We talk to our boys all the time,” he said. “Even before we left Modesto, we called it what it is: Dad looked at pictures of naked people and that was the wrong thing to do. We’ve been very upfront with them. They’re innocent – only 5 and 8 years old – and you don’t want to damage that, but they’re going to come into it.
“Our boys are now 13 and 10. On TV, we block out certain channels. We put passwords on Riley’s iPhone. We know there are people out there who are targeting him with their ads. There is an agenda to hook these boys early on.”
Along with the confession of wrongdoing, Jill added, came a powerful message.
“We told our kids, ‘Daddy’s made a big mistake, but we’re going to be here as a family, and if you ever make a mistake, we’ll be here as a family for you.'”
Walking in the light
Ulven finished his seminary education in 2009 and signed on again with the Navy, this time as a chaplain. He’s living in Maryland and stationed at a Coast Guard facility.
His experiences have helped him advise others who have come to him, troubled with sexual addictions. Ulven urges them to join an accountability group, which he called “the key to my recovery. You have to talk to other males about it.”
He likes a Bible verse from I John: “It talks about walking in the light. It doesn’t mean walking perfectly without ever stumbling. It means shining the light on the darkest part of our hearts.
“To me, that means if we are going to be pure as Christian men, we have to be able to admit everything. For the first 15 years of my addiction, I tried to overcome it without shining a light in that darkness. I prayed for years for God to instantly deliver me. He does that sometimes, but he didn’t do it with me. He did it when I was willing to admit everything and walk in the light.”
Like a recovering alcoholic, Ulven said, “I will always be a recovering sex addict.
“There are boundaries that I now need to set to keep myself sober (such as) accountability with other men. Another key tool for my recovery is on every computer I use, is a program called Covenant Eyes, accountability software that keeps track of all the sites you go to. Anything it flags, it sends to my accountability partner.”
Don’t quit working for God just because you’ve had problems, he said.
“When everything fell apart back in Modesto, and I was questioning whether I should even be in ministry, I was reminded that God had used me despite everything. I became very excited to see how God could use me without all those shackles.
“For years, I was withholding a part of me from God. Now I say, ‘God, you can have all of me.'”
SAN ANTONIO — Four sisters are suing the Archdiocese of San Antonio, claiming a priest sexually abused them for years. The lawsuit claims that the Rev. Theo Clerx abused the girls for a unspecified period of time, that began when the sisters were 10, 11 and 12 years old.Clerx has since passed away.
“I can’t answer for any of my sisters,” said Rocio Castro, one of the victims, “but I know what happened to me was not correct.”The lawsuit claims some of the abuse happened at St. John Berchmans Church, and Castro said some of it also took place at her childhood home, while her mother was away at work.”The mother was a janitor at the church, and he talked the mom into giving him a key,” said Bob Hillard, attorney for the sisters. “It just factually goes graphically downhill from there, as you can imagine.”Although the Archdiocese of San Antonio would not comment on the lawsuit, in a statement posted on their website, Archbishop Gustavo García Siller said, “We continue to pray for the healing of anyone who is the victim of abuse and remain committed to work toward making all catholic institutions in the archdiocese a place of safety, love, and peace for all our people.”To read the full statement from the Archdiocese of San Antonio, click here (PDF).
